Audi . How Do I Change the Brakes on My GTI?The VW GTI is an iconic automobile that combines the practicality of a hatchback with sports-car-like reflexes and performance. The GTI's brakes should be inspected regularly for wear and replaced if necessary. Having a shop do a full brake job on a GTI can be quite expensive, but for the ambitious weekend mechanic, this is a job that can be done in an afternoon with the right approach and tools. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stands Socket set and ratchet Breaker bar Open-ended wrenches Allen wrenches Flat-head screwdriver Needle-nose pliers Brake piston tool New brake pads and rotors Step by Step : 1 Loosen the lug nuts that hold the GTI's wheels on. Raise the car at all four corners and lower it securely onto jack stands. Finish removing the wheels and set them aside. 2 Spray brake cleaner on all of the brake components and any nearby components and wipe everything down with a clean, dry rag. Spray penetrating lubricant onto the large caliper bolts. Carefully pry off the large anti-vibration clip with the flat-head screwdriver. 3 Pull the plastic covers off the caliper pins. Remove the pins with a ratchet and a 7-mm socket. Unclip the brake pad wear sensor on the front driver's side. Remove the two large caliper bolts for the caliper. Use the breaker bar if they are on very tight. 4 Slide the caliper off the rotor. Support the caliper with wire on a nearby suspension piece so that there is no weight on the brake line, which could damage it. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper and caliper bracket. Remove the two 21-mm bolts that hold the caliper carrier on and set it aside. 5 Remove the set screw that holds the rotor on with a T30 Torx bit. Pull the rotor off the hub. Put some anti-seize on the rotor mounting surface and slide the new rotor onto the hub. Install the Torx set screw. 6 Bolt the caliper carrier back on. Clean and lubricate the caliper pins and reinstall them. Using the clamp, compress the piston in the caliper so that there will be room for the new, thicker brake pads. Install the new inside brake pad and then the outside brake pad. Slide the caliper back onto the rotor. Reinstall the caliper carrier pins and the black plastic covers. 7 Repeat all of the above steps for the other side of the front of the car. Reconnect the brake wear sensor and the anti-vibration clips. Pump the brake from inside the car until the pedal feels firm. 8 Move to the rear of the car. Spray brake cleaner on all of the brake components and any nearby components and wipe everything down with a clean, dry rag. Spray penetrating lubricant onto the large caliper bolts. Remove the 13-mm caliper bolts with a socket. Slide the caliper off the rotor and remove the old brake pads. Remove the caliper carrier bolts and set the caliper carrier aside. 9 Remove the T30 Torx bit set screw that holds the rotor on. Pull the rotor off. Apply some anti-seize to the rotor mounting surface on the hub. Slide the new rotor on and install the set screw. Step by Step : 10 Reinstall the caliper carrier. Use the caliper piston tool (see Resources 1) to retract the caliper to make room for the new pads. Install the new pads onto the caliper carrier. Slide the caliper back onto the rotor. Tighten the caliper mounting bolts. Repeat for the other side of the back of the car. Pump the brakes until they feel firm. Step by Step : 11 Reinstall the wheels, raise the car off the jack stands and lower it to the ground. Set the emergency brake and release it a few times to set the brake, which is self-adjusting. Audi . How Do I Change the Rotors on a 1999 Ford Contour?Brake pads and rotors are designed to wear out and will need to be replaced at various intervals throughout the Contour's lifespan. Generally, a set of rotors will last through three or four sets of pads before they must be replaced. When preparing to change the rotors on your Contour, keep in mind you get what you pay for with most auto parts. If you purchase economy rotors, be prepared to change them twice as often as professional grade rotors. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Safety glasses Wheel chocks Lug wrench Floor jack 2 jack stands Drip pan Brake clean Socket set Cutting pliers White lithium grease Torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Put your safety glasses on and engage the parking brake. Chock the driver side rear wheel. 2 Loosen the lug nuts on both front wheels with the lug wrench. 3 Slide the floor jack under the front end and jack the Contour up far enough to place the jack stands under the front frame on either side. Lower the car onto the jack stands. 4 Take the lug nuts off the right front wheel by hand and set them aside. Pull the wheel off and set it to the side as well. 5 Place the drip pan under the brake assembly and spray the brakes down thoroughly with brake clean in order to remove as much brake dust as possible. 6 Remove the caliper bolts with the socket wrench and then pull the caliper up and away from the rotors. Set the caliper on the lower control arm. 7 Pull the rotor off by hand. (In the event they have never been removed before, snip off and remove the small factory retaining ring that sits on one stud with a pair of cutting pliers.) 8 Slide the new rotor on and thread a lug nut onto a stud by hand to hold the rotor in place while you reinstall the caliper in reverse of how you removed it. (Clean the caliper slide pins with brake clean and lubricate them with white lithium grease every time you have the caliper off.) 9 Remove the lug nut that you installed in Step 8 and reinstall the wheel and lug nuts by hand. Step by Step : 10 Repeat Steps 4 through 9 on the other side, then use the jack to put the Contour back on the ground. Once the Contour is down, tighten the lug nuts on both wheels to 75 ft/lbs. Tips & Warnings It is always best to replace the brake pads when replacing rotors to ensure the best wear and braking capability. *When your engine heats up, the pressure in its system rises. If this pressure exceeds the level of pressure that your radiator cap is built to withstand and you don't have a recovery system, the liquid in the system bypasses the radiator cap and escapes through an overflow pipe located near the fill hole. This pipe provides a safe way for your vehicle to "let off steam." Of course, if this kind of overflow occurs often, your car loses enough water and coolant to substantially lower the level in the cooling system. You have to keep adding water, and eventually, the level of coolant protection is inadequate. To prevent this problem, you can buy and install a coolant recovery kit yourself by following the instructions in "Using a coolant recovery system" in Chapter 14. Pressure caps are relatively inexpensive, but if you have a cap that isn't working properly, or if you have the wrong type of cap, you'll be amazed at the amount of trouble it can cause. For example, if the gasket (rubber ring) inside the cap isn't working, the pressure in the system will escape, allowing the liquid to boil at a lower temperature. A modern cooling system that's been designed to operate normally at temperatures over 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and that is filled with liquid and in perfect condition, will still continually boil over if the radiator cap isn't operating efficiently. That boiling liquid will be forced into the overflow system, and your vehicle's engine will overheat. This can cause an inconvenient highway breakdown and possible danger to your engine. If your vehicle overheats on the highway, Chapter 21 can get you cooled down safely. The section "If Your Car Is a Chronic Hothead" in Chapter 14 offers remedies for other overheating problems. Although most vehicles come equipped with a safety pressure cap, which features a little lever that releases the pressure before you remove the cap, some older vehicles have a cap that lacks this feature. If you have one of these caps, replace it with a safety pressure cap immediately. Doing so can keep you from burning yourself if you have to remove the cap while there's still some pressure in the system. Part II: What Makes It Go? 764 The Fan Air rushing through the radiator cools things off when you are driving merrily down the freeway, but a fresh supply of air won't be moving through the radia tor fins when the vehicle is standing still or crawling its way through heavy 395

Today, most fans have a plastic shroud that funnels air through the radiator. And some sports cars have air dams that help force the air up through the radiator from below. Originally, a fan belt drove the fan as long as the engine was running. Now, fan clutches on many vehicles automatically limit the fan's movement at speeds over 25 mph. Because the air rushing past them allows these fans to simply "coast" at high speeds, the engine doesn't have to work as hard or burn as much fuel to supply the power that the fans would normally con sume. Most cars with transverse engines have electric fans, some of which Audi . Who designed the aston martin?

The Water Pump The water pump (see Figures 8-1 and 8-3) draws the liquid from the radiator through the bottom radiator hose and sends it to the engine, where it circulates through water jackets located around the combustion chambers in the cylinders and other hot spots. An accessory belt drives some water pumps, while some overhead cam engines drive the water pump with the timing belt. If the timing belt drives your water pump, the water pump will be difficult to see unless you remove the plastic timing belt cover. Here's how — and why — it does this: The thermostat is a small, metal, heat-sensitive valve (see Figure 8-4) that's usually located where the upper radiator hose meets the top of the engine. (On a few vehicles, you find the thermostat where the bottom hose joins the engine. Your owner's manual should tell you where yours is.) When it senses hot liquid, the thermostat allows the liquid to pass through. But when the thermostat senses that the liquid is cold (like when you first start your car in the morning), it shuts and doesn't allow the liquid to circulate through the radiator (refer to Figure 8-1). As a result, the liquid stays in the engine, where it gets hot as the engine warms up, and in turn, the increasing heat of the liquid helps the engine to warm up more quickly. As a result, the vehicle runs more efficiently and burns less fuel. Figure 8-4: A thermostat. The Heater Core The heater core is located inside the vehicle between the instrument panel and the firewall. It looks like a miniature radiator minus the fill neck and cap. The purpose of the heater core is to provide heat for the passenger compart ment. The same liquid that the water pump circulates throughout the engine Audi . Where starter is located?

That's all you need to know about the parts involved in the cooling system and how they work. Of course, some vehicles have more complicated systems, or variations on the theme, such as two fans run by electric thermostats that aren't connected to the water pump at all. These go on independently and draw air in to cool the engine when necessary. But in general, if you understand the way the basic cooling system works, you should have little trouble handling the one in your vehicle.
